Hospital da Luz in Vila Franca de Xira
RACE was responsible for the design and execution of the HVAC mechanical installations at Clínica Hospital da Luz in Vila Franca de Xira.
The building, with a healthcare/hospital typology, comprises four operational floors: level -1 accommodates the technical and support facilities; level 0 includes reception and imaging diagnostics; level 1 is dedicated to medical care and procedures; level 2 houses consultation areas and administrative services; while the rooftop integrates the main technical equipment, including HVAC systems, water services, and photovoltaic panels.
Thermal conditioning is provided by four air-cooled heat pump/chiller units in four-pipe configuration, installed outdoors, with three units operating in duty and one on standby. To ensure comfort in common areas such as waiting rooms, consultation offices, laboratories, and technical spaces, horizontal four-pipe fan coil units were installed above suspended ceilings.
Ventilation and air renewal are predominantly mechanical. Each floor is served by a dedicated Fresh Air Handling Unit (AHU) with energy recovery. In addition, two AHUs were installed for the specific climate control of MRI suites. For areas with critical requirements, including the Minor Surgery Room, Operating/Recovery Room, and Endoscopy, hygienic-type AHUs were deployed, with the Minor Surgery Room being served by a dedicated AHU.
Smoke control is provided by pressurization fans in the vertical escape routes, ensuring compliance with fire safety requirements.
The domestic hot water (DHW) system is based on a heat pump supplying five storage tanks, with provision for DHW preheating via the heat pump/chiller whenever they operate in cooling mode and thermal energy is available.
The project was fully developed using BIM methodology, ensuring accurate coordination among disciplines and an efficient, high-quality execution. This reflects RACE’s commitment to advanced technology, engineering precision, and excellence in building services design for the healthcare sector.
